In Episode 8 of the EWNET Podcast, two EWNET network members, Konjit Hailu (PhD) and Elshaday Hagos, discuss their educational backgrounds, career journeys and research interests. Konjit reflects on how her experience as a working mother shaped her interest in work-life balance among women entrepreneurs in Ethiopia, a theme she explored during her doctoral and postdoctoral research. Elshaday, an early-career researcher in peace and security studies, discusses her work on the impact of technology on peace and conflict. Both are based at Addis Ababa University. Konjit has spent more than 15 years teaching and conducting research at the School of Business and Economics while Elshaday is an early-career researcher at the Institute for Peace and Security Studies.

In the second half of the conversation, they discuss their research methodologies, the challenges they have encountered and the lessons they have learned. Konjit shares her experience of conducting qualitative interviews during the COVID-19 pandemic, explaining that while public health restrictions prevented in-person interviews, shifting to telephone interviews enabled her to reach a wider range of women factory workers than would otherwise have been possible.

The episode concludes with both researchers reflecting on their current projects and future research plans. They emphasize the value of EWNET as a platform for building a supportive research community, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration and strengthening research networks across Ethiopia.

የEWNET ፖድካስት ክፍል 8 የEWNET አባላት ውይይት – ቆንጂት ኃይሉ (ዶር) እና ኤልሻዳይ ሐጎስ እውነት ፖድካስት ሰባት፣ ዶክተር ቆንጅት ኃይሉን እና ኤልሻዳይ ሃጎስን ይዞልን የቀረበ ሲሆን ይህ ፖድካስት የእውነት የኢትዮጵያ ሴቶች ጥናት እና ምርምር ጥምረት አባላት እርስበርስ ለመታወቅ፣ አብሮ ለመስራት፣ ስራቸውን ለህዝብ ለማስታወቅ የሚጠቀሙበት የእውነት ፖድካስት ጠረቤዛ ሲሆን፣ በዚህ ጠረቤዛ ዶክተር ቆንጅት ኃይሉ እና ኤልሻዳይ ሃጎስ በስራዎቻቸው ዙሪያ፣ እስከ አሁን ድረስ በሰረዋቸው ጥናቶች ዙሪያ ውይይት ያደረጉ ሲሆን። ዶክተር ቆንጅት ኃይሉ በንግድ ስራ ትምህርት ቤት በአዲስ አበባ ዩኒቨርሲቲ ተመራማሪ እና አስታማሪ ስትሆን ከ15 ዓመት በላይ በዚህ ሞያ ዘርፍ የሰራች ናት። ኤልሻዳይ ሃጎስ ደግሞ በኢትዮጵያ Institute for Peace and Security Studies በተባለ በአዲስ አበባ ዩኒቨርሲቲ ስር ያለ ተቋም ውስጥ ያለች ወጣት ተመራማሪ ናት። እሷም እስከ አሁን በሰራቻቸው ስራዎች ዙሪያ የጥናት እና ምርምር ሂደቶቹ ላይ ከዶክተር ቆንጅት ኃይሉ ጋር ግንዛቤን የሚሰጥ፣ስለሁለቱ ኢትዮጵያውያን ሴቶች፣ ተመራማሪዎች፣ በመሃበረሰብ ሳይንስ እና Humanities በምንለው ዘርፍ እስከ አሁን የሰሯቸውን የጥናት እና ምርምር ተግባራት ዙሪያ፣ አሁን በአንዳንድ የምርምራቸው ስነዘድዮች ዙሪያ፣ እንዲሁም በዚህ ወቅት እየሄዱበት ስላል የጥናት እና ምርምር ሂደት ወይም አቅጣጫ ሲወያዩ እንሰማለን። ዶክተር ቆንጅት በአገር ውስጥ፣በአፍሪካም፣ እንዲሁም ደግሞ በዓለም ዙሪያ ካሉ የተለያዩ የጥናት እና ምርምር ቡድኖች ጋር በመተባበር የሰራች ሲሆን፣ ኤልሻዳይ ሃጎስ ደግሞ በኢትዮጵያ ውስጥ እንዲሁም ደግሞ በዲጂታል ስፔሱ በሊዩነት ማህበራዊ ሚዲያ በኢትዮጵያ ባሉ ቀውሶች፣ ጦርነቶች ወይም ደግሞ የሰላም ሂደቶች ላይ ምን አይነት አስታዋጾ አለው? በሚል የጥናት እና ምርምር ዙሪያ ላይ የምታተኮር ተመራማሪ ናት።

ምርምራቸው ለአሁናዊ ማህበራዊ ጥያቀዎች ስላበረከቱት አስተዋፅኦ ሲናገሩ፣ ኤልሻዳይ ምርምሯ በፖሊሲ ለውጦች ላይ ተጽዕኖ ማሳደር የጀመረ መሆኑን ብትገነዘብም፣ ገና ብዙ የሚቀራት መንገድ እንዳለ በትህትና ገልጻለች። ቆንጂት በበኩሏ፣ ስለተቀጠሩ ሴቶች የሚወጡ አብዛኛዎቹ የመንግስት ሪፖርቶች ጥልቀት የሌላቸው እንደሆኑ ታምናለች። ሆኖም ተሳትፋበት የነበረው አንዱ የምርምር ፕሮጀክት እስከ ፖሊሲ ደረጃ ተጽዕኖ በማሳደር፣ ሁሉም የመንግስት ተቋማት የሕፃናት ማቆያ ማዕከል እንዲኖራቸው የሚያስገድድ አዋጅ እንዲወጣ አስችሏል። በተጨማሪም፣ ምርምሮች ወዲያውኑ ትልቅ ለውጦችን ባያመጡም፣ ብዙ ጊዜ ችላ የተባሉ እና በግምት የተሳሳተ ምስል የተሰጣቸውን የሴቶች ሕይወት ማሳየት እና ድምፃቸው መሆን በራሱ ትልቅ ስኬትና ክብር መሆኑን ተወያይተዋል። ወደፊት ስላላቸው እቅድ ሲናገሩ፣ ቆንጂት በንጹህ ኢኮኖሚ እና በማይከፈልባቸው የእንክብካቤና የቤት ውስጥ ሥራዎች ጉዳይ ላይ የበለጠ ለመስራት እንደምትፈልግ ገልጻለች። ምክንያቱም የኮቪድ ወቅት ሴቶች የሚሸከሙትን ያልታየ እና ያልተገመተ የሥራ ጫና እንዲሁም በጤናቸውና በአጠቃላይ ደህንነታቸው ላይ የሚያሳድረውን ተጽዕኖ በግልጽ አሳይቷል። በተጨማሪም የቤተሰብ አባላት የሥራ ሸክምን በጋራ መሸከም እንዳለባቸው ግንዛቤ ለመፍጠር ፍላጎት አላት።

ከዚህ በተጨማሪ በመንግስት አዋጅ መሠረት የተቋቋሙት የሕፃናት ማቆያ ማዕከላት ምን ያህል እንደተሻሻሉ እና ምን ዓይነት ችግሮች እንዳሉባቸው ለማጥናት አቅዳለች። እንዲሁም ለማህበረሰቡ ውይይት መነሻ የሚሆኑ የምርምር ርዕሶች ላይ ለመሳተፍ ተስፋ አላት። በሌላ በኩል፣ ኤልሻዳይ ወደፊት በምርምር ፕሮግራሞች ውስጥ በተለያዩ የሙያ መስኮች መካከል የሚኖር ትብብር እና መስተጋብር እንዲጠናከር ማየት ትፈልጋለች። እሷ እንደምታምነው፣ ውስብስብ ማህበራዊ ጉዳዮችን ለመፍታት በተለያዩ የሙያ መስኮች ያሉ ባለሙያዎች በጋራ መስራት ወሳኝ ነው። ይህ ፖድካስት በእውነት የኢትዮጵያ ሴቶች ተመራማሪዎች ማህበር ወይም ጥምረት በኩል እየተዘጋጀ የሚቀርብላችሁ ሲሆን ቀጣዩን ውይይት እንድትጋበዙልን በትህተና እጠይቃለሁ።

Elshaday Hagos

Elshaday Hagos is a passionate peace and development professional with a background in research, communication, and project coordination. She holds a Master’s in Global Studies with a specialization in Peace and Security in Africa and a BA in Political Science and International Relations. She has worked with institutions like IPSS and Initiative Africa, contributing to peacebuilding, transitional justice, and youth empowerment initiatives. She brings experience in training design, stakeholder engagement, and policy advocacy. Committed to inclusive development and civic engagement, Elshaday is driven by a vision of sustainable peace and social justice across the African continent.

Konjit Hailu

Konjit Hailu Gudeta is an Assistant Professor at Addis Ababa University and a gender, management and development scholar dedicated to advancing women’s economic empowerment through evidence-based research and engagement. She holds a Ph.D. from Tilburg University (the Netherlands) and an MA in Business Administration. Her career spans teaching, academic research and policy-oriented consultancy. With over 20 years of experience, she has led and contributed to high-impact research and consultancy projects that address gendered inequalities in workplaces, communities and households, collaborating with various national and international organizations.

Her work includes leading and contributing to studies on women’s labor conditions, women’s entrepreneurship, unpaid care work and the care economy in Ethiopia. As a postdoctoral researcher at Maastricht University, the Netherlands, she participated in a study on female workers in foreign direct investment firms in Ethiopia, examining employment relations, decent work conditions and their well-being. She collaborates on international research initiatives such as the International Study of Work and Family, involving researchers from more than 30 countries. She also contributed to the development of a care policy guideline informing regional dialogue and practice in Africa, as well as a national gender action plan for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) in Ethiopia.

Her collaborative research has resulted in several peer-reviewed publications, including articles in reputable journals and book chapters. Her scholarship emphasizes qualitative research that amplifies women’s voices across diverse contexts. Konjit has presented her work and delivered keynote speeches at several national and international conferences and she serves on committees and boards of local and international professional associations. Driven by the belief that women’s economic empowerment is central to inclusive and sustainable development, Konjit is committed to producing research that centers women’s lived realities and supports meaningful structural and social change.
