Political Settlements Research Programme Workshop

From 6 to 7 July 2015, the Rift Valley Forum hosted a two-day training workshop in Bukavu, in the eastern DRC, as part of the DFID-funded Political Settlements Research Programme (PSRP). The programme is implemented by a consortium led by Edinburgh University that includes the RVI.

The workshop brought together ten researchers, eight of them from the Congo, in preparation for a research project on public authority and armed groups in the DRC’s two Kivu provinces.

The PSRP programme will examine local governance structures and public services, and the role armed actors may have in their functioning. The aim is to assess the role, rationale and impact of external interventions aimed at strengthening state institutions in contexts characterized by a strong presence of armed groups.

The workshop was dedicated to research methodologies and ethics in conflict zones, and to group discussions on components central to the research project including security, conflict and justice, and governance of natural resources.
