In August 2022, a group of South Sudanese academics, early-career researchers, independent research consultants, research assistants and professors gathered at the Rift Valley Institute in Juba to discuss ethical principles and practices for an equal, vibrant research community in South Sudan. The meeting built on discussions on ethical research that RVI has been engaged in since 2019 and was supported by Cardiff University. The following statement summarises this conversation and sets out key actions.
To complement this important statement, two podcasts have been released. The first captures the challenges and ethical considerations South Sudanese researchers face in the field, emphasizing the need for transparency and safety. The second podcast gives a platform to South Sudanese women researchers, addressing the specific hurdles they encounter, including gendered risks and the pursuit of equitable research opportunities. Both podcasts serve to deepen the understanding of the statement and are essential listening for engaging with the research community in South Sudan.
