The Peace Research Facility

The Peace Research Facility (PRF) of the Rift Valley Institute is a multi-year project implemented by the Rift Valley Institute (RVI) in Ethiopia. Since 2022, PRF has been working in conflict analysis and peacebuilding in Ethiopia.

With an objective of creating “A more peaceful and inclusive Ethiopia” in the long run, the PRF is a space wherein key conflict and peace research institutes and individual analysts come together to jointly reflect on and analyse conflict and political dynamics across the country.

The PRF staff and consultants pose for a photo after a visit with the UK Ambassador to Ethiopia in Addis Ababa.

Accordingly, PRF has three streams of work, namely conflict trend analysis, knowledge for peace and support for conflict-sensitivity programming. The first stream, Conflict Trend Analysis is a core analytical activity of the PRF, where Ethiopian regional analysts and national experts produce timely and empirically informed analysis of conflict and peace trends in Ethiopia which is then synthesized into a monthly bulletin.

The second stream is the Knowledge for Peace (K4P) research project which aims to produce empirically grounded insights into current conflict dynamics in Ethiopia and identify programming and policy options that strengthen peace capacities and strategies. Research carried out as part of K4P scrutinises how localised conflict processes, actors and outcomes influence and are influenced by four nation-wide macro conflict drivers that have shaped Ethiopia since 2014.

The third and final stream is offering support to conflict sensitivity programming to the UK government’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) Ethiopia office.

For the next three years, PRF plans to build on these activities and work on new research themes to inform programming as well as help decision-making to achieve our vision of seeing a more peaceful and inclusive Ethiopia.
