Diaspora Humanitarianism in Complex Crises: PhD Scholarship Announcement

The Somali diaspora has been a lifeline for people in Somalia for many years, responding to major humanitarian emergencies and everyday crises. The ways in which this humanitarian response is mobilised, channelled and delivered to people in Somalia is the subject of a new research project—Diaspora Humanitarianism in Complex Crises—run by the Danish Institute for International Studies, the University of Nairobi, Rako Research and Communication Centre and the Rift Valley Institute.

The project, funded by the Danish government, is advertising for qualified candidates to apply for a fully funded PhD position. A description of the project and application process can be found here. The deadline for applications is 26 August 2019 at 12 AM (East African Time).

RVI’s participation in this project builds on its previous work with the World Bank on remittances and vulnerability in Somalia. RVI Director, Mark Bradbury, said that: ‘We are excited to be collaborating on this new research project which will also be supporting young researchers’.
