Work for the RVI: Opportunities in London and Nairobi – application deadline December 2014

recruitmentOn 30 November the Rift Valley Institute announced a search for three new senior staff members, to be based in the London and Nairobi offices of the Institute. The RVI London office also has a vacancy for an intern from January 2015. Applications for all posts are due in late December.

The Director of Programmes is a key post in the RVI senior management team in London, working closely with the Executive Director to coordinate and develop the Institute’s programmes across all sectors. The work of the Director of Programmes will involve extensive travel in Eastern and Central Africa, liaising with the Horn of Africa and East Africa Regional Director and RVI staff in Nairobi, Juba and elsewhere.

John Ryle, the RVI Executive Director, describes the post as requiring a person of outstanding character, with energy, tact, good judgment, managerial acumen and a rapid grasp of RVI’s work in Eastern and Central Africa.

The Operations Manager is a central position in the RVI Nairobi office. This post involves responsibility for the smooth running of the RVI’s field operations in East Africa and the Horn and elsewhere in the region, working with the Horn of Africa and East Africa Regional Director in Nairobi and the RVI Director of Finance and Operations in London.

The Education Manager will be based either in Nairobi or in London. She or he will be responsible for running the Institute’s graduate-level field training courses, and expanding the RVI’s education programme across the Eastern and Central Africa region. The ideal candidate for this position will combine management skills with experience in higher education and a knowledge of the region.

Additional qualifications for all positions include a high degree of fluency in written English and command of one or more of the languages commonly-spoken in Eastern and Central Africa.

The RVI London office is also recruiting an intern to work on the Institute’s communications and publications. This is a three-month position, starting in January.

The Institute also maintains a register of consultants, including researchers for projects in Eastern and Central Africa, technical writers, editors and fund-raising specialists. Consultants are currently sought for South Sudan and Somalia.

The application deadline for the RVI staff vacancies is 31 December for the Director of Programmes and 23 December for the Operations Manager, the Education Manager and the internship.
