Great Lakes Course 2012

The third Great Lakes Course was held in Bujumbura, Burundi from 7 to 13 July. The Director of Studies was Jason Stearns, also director of RVI’s Usalama Project and author of the acclaimed Dancing in the Glory of Monsters. The Deputy Director of Studies was Emily Paddon, Trudeau Scholar and Lecturer in International Relations at the University of Oxford. The Director of the course was Aly Verjee, senior researcher with RVI, who managed the Eglise du Christ au Congo’s observation mission for the Congolese elections of 2006. New teaching staff this year included Ida Sawyer, Stef Vandeginste, Eugene Ntaganda and Jean-Benoit Falisse. Teaching, with simultaneous translation in French and English, was complemented by a historical tour of Bujumbura, a football match against Bujumbura Seniors (who won 5-1) at the University of Burundi, a presentation on the history of Congolese pop music and a screening of Burundi 1850-1962, directed and introduced by the Burundian filmmaker Léonce Ngabo.
