Livelihoods in South Sudan

In July 2011, South Sudan gained independence and became the world’s newest country. A few years after the celebrations, the country has experienced renewed conflict and political strife that have claimed countless lives and displaced many. This has had a dramatic impact on livelihoods in South Sudan.

On 10 October 2016, the Rift Valley Forum and Secure Livelihoods Research Consortium (SLRC) hosted a public forum to disseminate the findings from SLRC’s four-year research that has investigated livelihoods and governance in South Sudan from independence to the current crisis.

The research examined the recovery of livelihoods, service provision and perceptions of the state at multiple levels. It also explored the implications of the ongoing crisis for international actors engaged in current humanitarian relief and state-building efforts.
