The sixth Hargeysa International Book Fair took place in Somaliland from 16-21 August 2013. Organized by the Redsea Online Culture Foundation in partnership with Kayd Somali Arts and Culture, the fair promotes arts and literature through public readings, panel discussions and creative writing competitions, and is particularly concerned to promote the engagement of young people. ‘In six years,’ the organizers say, ‘the Fair has become the main platform for arts in the Somali regions and one of the largest celebrations of literature in East Africa.’ The theme of this year’s festival was ‘Journey’, reflecting a nomadic culture and the experiences of Somalis over the past two decades: tales of flight and survival, but also of optimism, hopes and expectations. RVI staff featured in several events, including a panel discussion on ‘The Journey of Somaliland Democracy’. See full news story here.
