IDP settlement in Baidoa (Abdirahman Edle, 2019)

Large parts of the Horn of Africa have been hit by one of the most severe droughts of the past 40 years. The Somali inhabited lowlands of Somalia, Ethiopia and Kenya are particularly affected, leading to widespread food insecurity and displacement. Rising global food prices and political instability in the region have complicated the crisis response. While projected needs for relief aid remain alarmingly high, donors have struggled to mobilize humanitarian assistance.

Based on recent field visits, this event sheds light on the impact of the drought in eastern Ethiopia, Somaliland and southern Somalia drawing on a series of blog pieces produced for the UK government’s XCEPT (Cross-Border Conflict Evidence, Policy and Trends) research program. Speakers will provide an update of the current humanitarian situation and debate what needs to be done.
