Field-based, action-oriented research is at the core of the RVI's work. The Institute is a leader in social investigation and analysis in areas including human security, political economy and community development. Research strands include electoral processes, land tenure systems, border communities and gender issues. In the realm of public information the Institute has developed an ongoing programme of policy discussion—the Nairobi Forum—and support for cultural centres and institutions of higher education in Somaliland, South Sudan and the DRC.
