Funders and Partners

RVI projects are funded by grants, course-fees and private donations. The Institute's funders include the following institutions.

Abaarso Tech

Abaarso Tech (AT) is an advanced educational institute in Abaarso, located in the northwestern Somaliland region of Somalia. Its main campus lies west of the provincial capital of Hargeisa.

Academy for Peace and Development

The APD was established in 1999 as a research institute focusing on peace building, bringing together representatives of different sectors of Somaliland society to identify priorities in the process of rebuilding Somaliland and facilitating dialogue on issues of human rights, democracy and good governance.

British Institute in Eastern Africa

The BIEA promotes research in the humanities and social sciences in eastern and central Africa.

Catholic University of Bukavu

The Catholic University of Bukavu (UCB), a private university founded by the archbishop of Bukavu in 1989, is RVI's partner during its Usalama Project. In this context, it hosted a two-day workshop on armed groups in July 2012.

The Centre for Federal Studies at Addis Ababa University

The Center for Federal Studies was established in 2007 in Addis Ababa University's FBE campus. It runs an MA and a PhD program in Federal studies.

Centre for Research and Dialogue

The Center provides a neutral forum for dialogue on development and reconstruction and other issues of concern to Somali society.

Conciliation Resources is a peacebuilding NGO supporting people at the heart of conflicts who are striving to find solutions.

Danish Institute for International Studies (DIIS)

DIIS is an independent research institution for international studies, financed primarily by the Danish state, carrying out research and analysis on a wide range of issues within the areas of globalisation, security and development.

Department for International Development (DFID)

The Department for International Development (DFID), set up in 1997, is the United Kingdom government department dedicated to promoting sustainable development and eliminate world poverty

Durham University

Durham University is a leading British centre for the study of history, including the history of Britain and Europe, Africa, the Americas and China.

The Global Justice Academy is an interdisciplinary network that supports research, teaching and knowledge exchange on global justice issues. It seeks to build on, consolidate and expand the work of existing centres and collaborations at the University of Edinburgh.

Gurtong Trust

The Gurtong Trust is an independent, not-for-profit, community-based project, which aims at removing all ethnic, political or personal obstacles on the way to unity, peace and mutual respect among South Sudanese.

Humanity United

Humanity United leads and supports efforts to lift up the voices and will of people, ensures good governance and the rule of law, engages markets and businesses as a force for change, and encourages the exploration of promising ideas and innovations to build peace and advance human freedom.

The Institute for Security Studies is an African organisation which aims to enhance human security on the continent. It does independent and authoritative research, provides expert policy analysis and advice, and delivers practical training and technical assistance. 

Institute of African and Asian Studies of the University of Khartoum

Since 1972 the Institute of African and Asian Studies has developed a comprehensive program of research and instruction within a broad interdisciplinary framework, offering degrees in the fields of African and Asian studies, Folklore, and Sudanese and African Languages.

International Rescue Committee

Founded in 1933, the IRC offers lifesaving care and life-changing assistance to refugees forced to flee from war or disaster.

J.M. Kaplan Fund

The J.M. Kaplan Fund was established in 1945 by businessman and philanthropist Jacob Merrill Kaplan, supporting the areas of civil liberties, human rights, civil rights, social justice, the arts, and the environment. 

Kwani Trust

Established in 2003, Kwani Trust is a Kenya-based literary network dedicated to developing, publishing and distributing contemporary African writing.

Marol Academy

The Marol Academy is a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting sustainable education in South Sudan.

Max Planck Institute of Social Anthropology

The Max Planck Institute for Social Anthropology in Halle, Germany, is one of the world’s leading centres for research in social and cultural anthropology. Common to all research projects at the Max Planck Institute is the comparative analysis of social change.

National Museums of Kenya

National Museums of Kenya is a multi-disciplinary institution whose role is to collect, preserve, study, document and present Kenya’s past and present cultural and natural heritage.

The Netherlands Institute of International Relations, known as ‘Clingendael’, is the leading Dutch think tank and diplomatic academy for international affairs. The institute provides public and private sector organisations with analyses of global developments in the fields of economic diplomacy, international security and conflict management. Clingendael focuses on security and Europe, and the position and the role of the Netherlands.

Open Society Foundations

The Open Society Foundations work to build vibrant and tolerant societies whose governments are accountable and open to the participation of all people.

Open Square Project

The Open Square Foundation aims to nurture an entrepreneurial environment where the marginalized are empowered and to promote effective and inclusive dialogue toward sustainable solutions.

Partners in Development Services

Partners in Development Services is a Sudanese consultancy group founded to mobilize national expertise in a new multi-disciplinary approach with a view of developing new and appropriate approaches and models for development.

Puntland State University

Puntland State University is a university in Garowe, established in March 1999 as a tertiary women's college, Garowe School of Management. After a year of operation, which saw the graduation of 60 women, the school was expanded to a two-year structure and renamed to Puntland Community College. In 2004, in cooperation with the United Nations Development Program and USIU Nairobi, it was expanded to include four-year programs and was renamed to Puntland State University.

The Redsea Cultural Foundation (RCF) aims to promote reading and creative writing in Somali speaking society with a particular focus on youth. In 2008 it established the annual Hargeysa International Book Fair, which has grown into one of the largest literary festivals in East Africa. In 2014, with a grant from the EU and in collaboration with RVI, RCF opened the Hargeysa Cultural Centre, which aims to support the revival of Somali culture to promote reconciliation, citizenship and tolerance.

Royal African Society

The goal of Royal African Society is to promote Africa in business, politics, culture and academia and foster better understanding and strong relationships between Britain, Africa and the world.

The Royal Institute for International Relations is an independent think-tank based in Brussels. It provides analysis and policy options, drawing on the expertise of its own research fellows, as well as that of external specialists, Belgian and foreign.

Royal Institute of International Affairs (Chatham House)

Chatham House, home of the Royal Institute of International Affairs, is a world-leading source of independent analysis, informed debate and influential ideas on how to build a prosperous and secure world for all.

Rumbek Senior Secondary School, one of the oldest functioning educational institutions in South Sudan, hosted the RVI Sudan Course from 2005-2011.

Sigrid Rausing Trust

The Sigfried Rausing Trust is a UK grant making foundation, founded in 1995 by Sigrid Rausing to support human rights globally.

South Sudan Law Society

The SSLS is a civil society organization that represents legal professionals in Juba. Its mission is to strive for justice in society and respect for human rights and the rule of law in South Sudan.

Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA)

The Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA) is one of the seven Departments of the Swiss government federal administration of Switzerland. It has supported a number of RVI projects including the South Sudan Customary Authorities project and the Rift Valley Forum.

The Sudd Institute

The Sudd Institute is an independent research organization that conducts and facilitates research and training to inform public policy and practice, to create opportunities for discussion and debate, and to improve analytical capacity in South Sudan.

The TJI is dedicated to examining how law and legal institutions assist—or not—the move from conflict to peace. The aims of the Institute are to build a theoretical and practical understanding of the role of 'transitional justice', and the underlying relationship between justice and peace, to examine the role of the international and domestic legal systems and institutions in facilitating transition from conflict, and to make links between the experience of Northern Ireland and international experience.

United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF)

The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) provides long-term humanitarian and developmental assistance to children and mothers in developing countries.

United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP)

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) coordinates United Nations environmental activities, assisting developing countries in implementing environmentally sound policies and practices.

United States Agency for International Development (USAID)

The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) is the United States government agency primarily responsible for administering civilian foreign aid.

United States Institute of Peace (USIP)

The United States Institute of Peace is an independent, nonpartisan institution established and funded by US Congress to increase the nation's capacity to manage international conflict without violence.

University of Hargeysa

University of Hargeisa is the Republic of Somaliland’s leading higher education institution and provides a wide range of undergraduate degree courses.

University of Juba

The University of Juba, founded in 1975, is a public university in South Sudan. It hosts the annual Juba University Lecture Series.
